On Carrying What We Cannot Yet Understand

June 3, 2026 · Barbara Ruffing

Faith is rarely the loud certainty we expect. More often, it is the quiet willingness to keep walking.

There is a kind of faith we are seldom taught about — the kind that does not arrive with fanfare or thunder, but simply with the willingness to take one more step. In the seasons where answers thin out, I have learned to lean into a smaller question: not 'why,' but 'with whom.' And the answer, every time, has been the same gentle presence that has carried me before. If you are in such a season, take heart. Carrying what you cannot yet understand is not the absence of faith. It may, in fact, be the very shape of it.
